For General Motors, 2008 Put Automaker in Second Place

General Motors has a long and illustrious history, one that began in 1908 with the merger of several auto companies into one entity. For the past 77 years, GM has enjoyed the title of world’s largest automaker, but that crown passed to Toyota Motor Corporation last year.
Toyota had been gaining on GM for years as the American automaker’s sales numbers stagnated or, as was the case last year, actually fell by several hundred thousand units. Despite selling more cars in China and in the United States than any other car maker, GM couldn’t keep their momentum going and actually sold approximately 600,000 fewer units than Toyota in 2008.
Credit should be given to Toyota who has persistently chipped at GM’s lead, making bold statements a few year’s back that they were poised to overtake GM when they were only selling two-thirds the number of cars as the old number one was then selling. Small, fuel efficient cars are the hallmark of Toyota, but the company has also taken a leadership role in the luxury car segment thanks to its Lexus line. For good measure, Toyota rolled out its youthful Scion division six years ago, another way that the company has been able to increase its visibility which has led to improved sales.
GM has also contributed to Toyota’s ascendancy as the company has rarely broken past its record selling pace of 9.5 million vehicles set some thirty years ago. Declining market share at home has led to most of that drop while its inability to conquer established European markets has also taken its toll. Without its strong presence in China, GM’s overall fortunes would have been much worse, likely spelling the end of the automaker.
Going forward, GM could rebound and see a sales increase beginning this year. Dogging the company, however, is its precarious financial position, one that could scuttle its recovery effort. Recently, GM announced that they would be consolidating operations and closing down or selling off excess brands, a move that could allow a trimmer GM to become profitable and grab more sales.
Lest anyone think that Toyota is moving forward trouble free, think again. In 2008, Toyota’s sales actually dropped, but not as severely as GM’s. In addition, the company is poised to report its first operating loss in its 70 year history, not a big drop but enough of a loss to concern Toyota management. Indeed, the Japanese car make recently replaced its CEO with the grandson of the founder of Toyota in a bid to reinvigorate sales.
Though the company is now #2, GM could borrow a phrase from rental car operator, Avis, and tell its customers, “we try harder.” That might work!

Suzuki Earns New Sales Record in June

In July 3, American Suzuki Motor Corporation announced sales of 10,325 automobiles for June, marking an increase of nine percent over the same month last year and the highest June sales volume in the history of the company. Year-to-date sales for 2007 are now at 57,488 vehicles, a figure depicting a one percent lead of mid-year 2006. For the entire year of 2006, Suzuki sold 100,990 vehicles and that was the first time in its 22-year history that the automaker enjoyed automobile sales of more than 100,000.
The sales growth of its all-new midsize crossover SUV, the XL7, spurred Suzuki Auto’s record of June sales volume as the XL7 sold 2,076 units, showing an impressive 121 percent increase over last year’s sales of the outgoing model. Sales of the SX4 compact crossover also helped push the company’s strong June results, which are poised to pursue well into the summer driving season and beyond. Its growth story was revealed earlier this spring, when Suzuki launched the next addition to its expanding product line, the all-new 2008 SX4 sedan that goes on sale in Suzuki dealerships nationwide this fall.
Mark Harano, president of American Suzuki’s Automotive Operations, said that Suzuki’s record-setting first-half sales performance, matched with the eagerly anticipated arrival of the SX4 sedan later this year, puts us on track to sustain their company’s growth throughout this year. Furthermore, he said that Suzuki has been able to surpass the hurdle with its lineup of affordable and value-packed vehicles, despite the fact that the auto industry sales have been tempered this year by so many factors such as the rising cost of fuel.

General Motors – Planning for the Future by Going Backwards
Falling Sales, job cuts and the threat of bankruptcy, just where did it all go so wrong for General Motors? Many people think it can be traced back to the final days of the EV1, when General Motors effectively killed a goose that had the potential to lay golden eggs. By 2003 GM had recalled and crushed all but a few EV1’s, those that weren’t were placed in museums. If this act of recklessness had never happened General Motors could now be a world leader in clean vehicle technology. Instead, they find themselves way behind their competitors, trying to catch up with Toyota and Honda in the production of hybrid vehicles, most notably with the Chevy Volt.
Rick Wagoner has gone on record as saying his biggest regret was “axing the EV1 electric-car program and not putting the right resources into hybrids. It didn’t affect profitability, but it did affect image.” An image that with hindsight has been irrevocably tarnished and as a result Wagoner paid the price with his job. Had GM continued to develop the EV1, the Chevy Volt or possibly an even better design would have been on our roads for years now and the one time world leader of the car market may have found itself in a much better situation to deal with the present downturn.
General Motors made a huge mistake in crushing the EV1’s, but were they solely to blame for the demise of this burgeoning technology? Many feel that General Motors intentionally sabotaged the prospects of the EV1, aided and abetted by state legislators, oil companies and even the government, but surely they found themselves in an invidious position. If the EV1 was as good as has been claimed, it could easily have been disastrous for General Motors. In designing and building a clean electric car, they were in effect showcasing just how unclean and polluting the rest of the cars they produced were. If this was the situation then GM would have found itself with just one product. But it was a product that was leading the world. Leading in a direction that may have helped to reduce our dependence on oil, a dependence that has caused conflicts worldwide.
For whatever reason General Motors chose to kill off the EV1, they now find themselves in a dire situation, they designed and built an electric car, a car that appealed to a market, a car that worked. When the Chevy Volt is launched, if it ever is, GM will have to win these people over again. The same people who had their hopes crushed when GM crushed all those EV1’s.
So today GM finds itself looking backwards, backwards to electricity and clean technology, looking backwards to the good old days, good old days when they led, not followed. If only they’d had hindsight, or even more importantly, courage, things may have turned out very different. Their image would have been a lot healthier and their profits… well they certainly couldn’t be any worse than they are today.

Quite why nobody has been able to work out; the answer probably lies in its apparently endless number of body and driveline permutations. The smaller-engine models are underpowered but miserly with fuel, whilst the top-line 109PS variant is livelier without being too thirsty. Adding some more power to the output of the T-Sport would help matters along- but they haven’t done so. LANDCRUISER Freshly revised, the land cruiser is a robust and dependable machine as it is best in wheelbase form; the shorter three door is a little lacking ability on tracks, and also pitches and rolls a little too much for comfort on the tarmac. The Landcruiser’s reputation was forged on its ability of road, and this version continues to be as good as its predecessors were. Quality of interior trim is high is as the level of standard equipment. If you are planning to cross the Sahara or take the short route across the Alps, this is the machine that should be at or near the top of your list. MATRIX The first of the new wave of small MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles from Toyota the nose of the Matrix bears the passing resemblance to Europe and Japans Corolla Verso. From the side it is very distinct, with big and bold lines swaged into the body work. Two engines are offered; a 1310PS four, and highly-tuned version of that same 1.8 litre four that delivers 170PS. This later engine, when paired with six speed gearbox and sports suspension system, makes for a quite exciting time, not least because the drive goes through the front wheels only; other Matrix models have the same option of four wheel drive.
